DAY 2: UP IN THE AIR

Activity 1: Flying Solo [4 points]
Jean Batten was a famous aviator (pilot) who was born in Rotorua, New Zealand in 1909. In the 1930s she made several record-breaking solo flights (on her own) across the world. In fact, she was the first person to fly solo from England to New Zealand - a huge achievement! She also flew a number of long solo flights between England and Australia/Brazil. When she flew, she always took a silk dress with her so that she could look beautiful at the parties she attended upon her arrival.
Amelia Earhart was an American aviator who lived at about the same time as Jean Batten. Like Jean, she also flew solo. In fact, she was the first female aviator to fly solo across the Atlantic Ocean. She flew all the way from Canada to Northern Ireland on her own without stopping. In 1937, Amelia Earhart attempted to circumnavigate (go right around) the world. Unfortunately, the flight ended in tragedy when she disappeared near Howland Island, about halfway between Australia and Hawaii. She was never found.

Activity 2: One Small Step for Man [4 points]
Neil Armstrong was an American astronaut and engineer. In 1969, Neil and his team of astronauts flew to the moon in a spacecraft called Apollo 11. When they arrived, Neil got out of the spacecraft and walked on the moon. He is the first person in history to walk on the moon! As Neil Armstrong set foot on the moon, he famously said, “That’s one small step for man, one giant leap for mankind.”
As you can imagine, landing on the moon is a very dangerous task. Many things can go wrong, and a number of astronauts have died attempting to land on the moon. Neil Armstrong, Buzz Aldrin and Michael Collins (the three astronauts on Apollo 11) must have been extremely brave.
I always imagine that walking on the moon must be like jumping on the trampoline! Do you like jumping on a trampoline? My daughter Laila loves it!

I feel joyful and happy weird and tingly almost like im flying
i flout among it all as i watch the world spin before me knowing my family are under me smiling proud of what i have become.

Activity 3: Scaling New Heights [6 points]
In 1953, Sir Edmund Hillary and his sherpa (guide), Tenzing Norgay, were the first people to reach the summit of Mt Everest, the tallest mountain in the world.
At the time, Edmund Hillary was an apiarist (beekeeper) from Auckland, New Zealand. During the summer he worked as a beekeeper, and during the winter, he climbed mountains. Becoming the first person to summit Everest was not easy. In fact, Edmund Hillary attempted (tried) to climb to the top of Mt Everest three times before he succeeded. He was determined to reach the top!
While this famous explorer and climber is mostly remembered for being the first person to reach the summit of Mt Everest, he has also made a huge impact on the world through his charity work. In 1960, Sir Edmund Hillary set up the Himalayan Trust to bring education, healthcare and safe drinking water to the people of Nepal - the country where Mt Everest is located.
i chose SPCA for my Charity that i like because SPCA helps animals as in dogs cats etc and i really think that if we dident have them our pets would be
alot more sick than they would be with SPCA

Activity 2: Discovering Aotearoa [4 points]
Many people believe that Kupe was the first explorer to discover Aotearoa, New Zealand in about 1300.
He navigated his way by waka to Aotearoa from Hawaiki using traditional Polynesian navigation techniques - just like Nainoa Thompson (from Activity 1) did much later on.
Legend says that he followed a great octopus all the way to Aotearoa/New Zealand and finally destroyed it in Cook Strait (the water between the North and South Islands).
Many years later, a Dutch explorer from The Netherlands, Abel Tasman, was exploring the Pacific Ocean when he came across New Zealand.
He thought that he was the first person to ‘discover’ the country (despite the fact that Māori already lived in New Zealand!) and made the claim in 1642 that he had ‘discovered’ a new land. His exploration of New Zealand inspired many other European explorers to follow his lead and travel to the Oceania.
Kupe and Abel Tasman were two different men from two very different backgrounds (cultures) who shared a common interest - exploration.

My own cultural experiences are with Denmark every year my family(me my 3 siblings and my grandparents) head down to a place called Valhalla (very close to goat island).
we always for everyday at lunch have open sandwiches witch is just a sandwich with no top and we have dinner and desert computations and then we have a time were we just play till the fire place is ready to sit round as read.
my Grandad comes from Denmark which by law means my family is Danish because my grandad fostered my mum i know hes kind but yeah he is danish and i am also a quter viking and an 8th dutch. my step dad came from south Africa and yeah Thats My family culture.

DAY 1: EXPLORERS

Activity 1: Setting Sail [4 points]
People from Pacific nations have always been expert explorers and navigators. In the past, they used the stars, sun and ocean swells to find their way (navigate) around the Pacific Ocean. Master navigator, Nainoa Thompson, has used the ancient Polynesian wayfinding skills to navigate around the world. In 2013, Nainoa led a crew across the Pacific Ocean on two large canoes (Hokule’a and Hikianalia). The crew stopped off in Aotearoa, New Zealand in 2015 on their journey and visited the Manaiakalani Schools in Auckland.
Here is a short video about Polynesian navigation. It describes the different ways ancient Polynesian navigators used the natural world to find their way around vast oceans. Incredible!
I think that it would be difficult to be ‘at sea’ for weeks at a time. I would miss my family but I would also enjoy the adventure. Let’s imagine that you were invited to join Nainoa for three weeks at sea. As part of the journey, you have to pack your own food.

My ten items i would bring to sea
1 Caned food   i would bring canned food because it will last for a few years and is the only thing that would stay good to eat for a long period of time.
2 Vegetables   i chose veges because i want to stay healthy as well as having a good carrot or 2.
3 Fruit    i also chose this to be healthy but to have natural sugar and so that i can have as many food sources as i can.
4 Sweets i want to have a little treat while im stranded in water for a little while.
5 Protein bars  i want to keep my protein up and my body shape well.
6 nut bars   i want to have some sort of nuts that i can have in more than just little hand fulls.
7 beetroot   beetroot keeps our ion levels up and its a tasty way of it as well.
8 food for marines  i want to have the food that the solders have because it can be cooked or not cooked and in this case not cooked.
9 food packs  food packs have a variety of different foods in them so i would not just have one  item i would have loads.
10 and some maccas maccas would be a good thing to have as a first meal becauseits not going to last long but it fills you up

EMR reflection

                                                     EMR Trip experience:
On Monday 25th of November 2019
Room 9 & Room 6 & some other students from other classes went on an exciting trip up north to goat island. We were all going down there to see all the fish and the wild life that lives in the water. We were also learning how to be confident with our snorkels. We were wearing wet suits googles with snorkels and flippers.

There was about 60 of us down there and it was all because of Mr Walker he has made it all happen and it was worth it.We all had to stay with our group and that is what my group did well at first my snorkel was not working so i was not able to swim very well with it on i had to do back stroke with no hands it was easy but i wasent keen on doing it the whole time because i wouldn't be able to see what i would have wanted to.So Ms Davis my group leader (The best one by far) had helped me and gotten me some new snorkels so that i could swim properly.

The whole Orcas group went with the over all leader to go and swim through the kelp and Ms Davis and i were not keen on that we dident want to go trough the kelp because we dident know how to get out and because we just dident want to get stuck and that is exactly what happen to me i got stuck in a ring of kelp and couldn't get out so i desided if i float above all of it i could get out.I did so i rejoined with Ms Davis and the rest of my group and kept swimming there were some amazing fish there but it was then time to get out of the water so we all headed back, had some food then we were allowed to go and play in the water by the teachers so we were exploring than Lukas and Django souted out to us and we came running they had found a little cave with shallow water so we played in that for a bit then we than found a rock  that was extremely deep in one end and we started jumping in it was great fun i was scared at first but then i built up the courage when Laura went with me and we both started to do it non stop then it was time to go so we left goat island  sadly.

Contain a suspenseful plot that usually revolves around people gathering clues together.

Have a happy anti bulling day Happy pink shirt day

God gave you them shoes to fit you, so put them on and wear them. Be yourself man, be proud of who you are. Even if it sounds corny, don’t let no one tell you, you ain’t beautiful.

Hey i just want to say  Happy pink shirt

Pink Shirt Day is about working together to stop bullying by celebrating diversity and promoting positive social relationships.

It’s about creating a community where all people feel safe, valued and respected, regardless of age, sex, gender identity, sexual orientation, ability, or cultural background.

On Pink Shirt Day we ask Aotearoa to Kōrero Mai, Kōrero Atu, Mauri Tū, Mauri Ora – Speak Up, Stand Together, Stop Bullying!
Celebrated annually around the globe, Pink Shirt Day began in Canada in 2007 when two students, David Shepherd and Travis Price, took a stand against homophobic bullying after a new year 10 student was harassed and threatened for wearing pink. We’ve been celebrating Pink Shirt Day in Aotearoa since 2009 and the campaign grows stronger and larger every year.
