DAY 1: EXPLORERS
Activity 1: Setting Sail [4 points]
People from Pacific nations have always been expert explorers and navigators. In the past, they used the stars, sun and ocean swells to find their way (navigate) around the Pacific Ocean. Master navigator, Nainoa Thompson, has used the ancient Polynesian wayfinding skills to navigate around the world. In 2013, Nainoa led a crew across the Pacific Ocean on two large canoes (Hokule’a and Hikianalia). The crew stopped off in Aotearoa, New Zealand in 2015 on their journey and visited the Manaiakalani Schools in Auckland.
Here is a short video about Polynesian navigation. It describes the different ways ancient Polynesian navigators used the natural world to find their way around vast oceans. Incredible!
I think that it would be difficult to be ‘at sea’ for weeks at a time. I would miss my family but I would also enjoy the adventure. Let’s imagine that you were invited to join Nainoa for three weeks at sea. As part of the journey, you have to pack your own food.
My ten items i would bring to sea
1 Caned food i would bring canned food because it will last for a few years and is the only thing that would stay good to eat for a long period of time.
2 Vegetables i chose veges because i want to stay healthy as well as having a good carrot or 2.
3 Fruit i also chose this to be healthy but to have natural sugar and so that i can have as many food sources as i can.
4 Sweets i want to have a little treat while im stranded in water for a little while.
5 Protein bars i want to keep my protein up and my body shape well.
6 nut bars i want to have some sort of nuts that i can have in more than just little hand fulls.
7 beetroot beetroot keeps our ion levels up and its a tasty way of it as well.
8 food for marines i want to have the food that the solders have because it can be cooked or not cooked and in this case not cooked.
9 food packs food packs have a variety of different foods in them so i would not just have one item i would have loads.
10 and some maccas maccas would be a good thing to have as a first meal becauseits not going to last long but it fills you up
Talofa Courtney, I hope you are having a groovy day!

Thank you for doing week one, activity one! The food items you’ve listed sound delicious and practical, and I like how you’ve explained why you would take each food item.
What are your top two favourite meals? Mine are nachos and roast chicken! Have you ever spent time in a canoe or kayak?
Have a good afternoon and I look forward to reading your other posts!
