DAY 3: WOMEN’S RIGHTS
Activity 1: The Right to Vote [4 points]
Kate Sheppard was a very famous and important New Zealander. In the late 1800s, she fought for women to have the right to vote in elections. She did this by creating petitions (lists with the names of people who supported her), running public meetings, writing letters to the newspaper, and talking to politicians.
As a result of her hard work, women in New Zealand (NZ) were first granted the right to vote in 1893. This made NZ the first country in the world to give women the right to vote. We call this right ‘women’s suffrage’.
In honour of Kate Sheppard’s work, the NZ government has put her image on the current $10 note.
i think if the govourment replaces Kate for someone from new Zealand who is a ladie
I think jacinda ardern should be the person replaced to go on the ten dollar note because my first reason is she is a mother of 1 and she is also a priminister she has to jugle mother hood and a job as a priminister which is something not many people could handle if they has the chance and she is still doing a great job while at it.

Hi Courtney,
ReplyDeleteIt's been a little while since I was last on your blog, and I'm so excited to be reading more posts from you. I hope you had an amazing start to 2020.
Well done for adding in phenomenal reasons as to why a fantastic person deserves the role on the $10 note! I like how you added a picture of Jacinda with her family and included great background information. I personally think Jacinda Ardern is an amazing and deserving person to be on the $10 note. Would you like to be a prime minister? I want to grow up to be a doctor and continue to study.
You are right that she has to juggle motherhood and being the representative of NZ. I think it would be a little difficult being a mother of a young child while being the prime minister of a whole country because you may not be able to give as much attention to your family. Would you ever consider growing up to have another family? She is indeed doing a great job of it and I admire her as a strong and caring person.
I also think Kate Sheppard is just extraordinary! She granted women the right to vote when lots were being treated unfairly, and now NZ is known for being the first country to allow women to vote. Don't you think that's amazing? I am so passionate about Kate Sheppard's movement and I hope one day I can make a difference like her. Do you think Kate Sheppard deserves to be on the $10 for what she did?
If you were told to chose a male person, who do you think deserves to be on the $10 note?
You are doing well with the Summer Learning Journey, don't stop the effort through these holidays! Enjoy your night.
