Activity 2: Overcoming Adversity [4 points]
Stephen Hawking (1942-2018) was an English scientist who was interested in studying the origin (beginning) of the universe. When he was just 21 years old, he was diagnosed with Motor Neuron Disease and, over time, he lost the ability to walk and talk. He needed to use a wheelchair to move around and a computer to help him to talk. The computer made his voice sound a bit funny but, most importantly, it meant he could still communicate with people.
Despite his diagnosis, Stephen Hawking lived a long and very productive life. He showed great determination and perseverance because he didn’t let his physical challenges stop him. He didn’t quit. Instead, he ‘overcame the odds’ and achieved a huge amount in his life.
My grandma went through a tough time with her sister having cancer in every part of her body she survived for a year after her diagnoses P.S she had had cancer her whole life but no one knew what it was at the time and my grandma had to visit her 24/7 she was really sad and one day she was told to come to the hospital because she might not make it through the night and they were right she went to visit her and i was awake the whole night worried i was meant to be a sleep and my grandma came home my granddad was waiting for her and she came home and started crying that was when i knew she dident make it my granddad just hugged her and then they went to bed she is now tring to stay happy every time she talks about her sister.I think everyone who knows about what happend is really proud of her

  1. Good Morning Courtney,

Kueni here again, how are you enjoying your summer holiday? I hope you have been having an awesome time and getting as much rest as you can before heading back to school in a few weeks.

Thank you for sharing a story about someone you know who has experienced a challenge and overcome it. I really enjoyed reading about your grandma and the challenge she faced.

I am so sorry to hear about your grandmas sister who passed away, cancer is horrible like that, it just creeps up and you never know what’s going to happen next. I really wish there was a cure for that. My grandma had cancer, one week we were told that the cancer was cleared and the next thing we know she was put to bed rest and placed in a hospice. It was a very sad time and I can only imagine the feelings your grandma was going through during this time of losing her sister.

I am so happy to hear that your grandma is now very happy and overcame that challenge, through spending time grieving her sister and is now in a better place in her life. Thank you for sharing this story and how proud you are of you grandma.

Are you very close with your grandma, what are some of the things you and her life to do together? I lived with mine half my life so I really enjoyed going and doing their grocery shopping with them :)

    Have a lovely day,
    Kueni :)

  2. Kia ora Courtney,

Thank you so much for sharing such a beautiful story of how your Grandma overcame the challenge of loosing her sister. I thought you were extremely brave to share a story that not only affected your Grandma but had an impact on you too. You must have been so brave and resilient to overcome the lose of your Great-Aunty.

Your Grandma sounds like such a kind woman to stay by her sisters side while she was sick. The fact that she is able to talk about her sister in a cheerful way shows me that she is an extremely strong person. I would be proud to have a Grandma like her. I would also be so proud to have a Granddaughter like you to share such a loving story.

I lost my Nana when I was your age. She lived in England and I was lucky to be able to spend a few months with her while she was sick. I was able to help her around the house and with her treatment. I remember struggling to sleep as well and feeling like I lost a piece of my heart. I am so proud of you for staying strong and using this activity to share a story of your Grandma.

    Arohanui,
    Megan ❤️
